At six years old  moved to Marietta, Washington county, Ohio; here his early boyhood was spent in agricultural pursuits with limited school advantages; after the death of his father in 1823, he lived in the family of a Mr. Stone, and lived with him until his death about 1830; he then started in the world for himself, his worldly effects being $1.18 in money, a few school books and a Bible, and was employed on a keel boat running down the Mississippi River, and continued this business principally until 1834, an then purchased a farm; in 1853 he sold his farm and came to Iowa, and purchased a large tract of land, and remained there fourteen years; he then went to Missouri and remained a short time, and came to Keokuk county, and purchased 310 acres of land; he married Miss Sarah A. Parker in 1835; she was a native of Pennsylvania.

Farmer  born in Maine in 1807, came to Washington county with his father in 1813. In 1851 he married Lucy L Blake. They had seven children—Mary A., Lynda, Angenora, Corwin, Cynthia, Howard, and Anna. Lynda moved to Kansas, Cynthia moved to Noble county, and the rest in Washington county. Captain Howard Hallett served three years in the Twenty-fifth Ohio volunteer infantry, and later became captain of the Salem guards.
