Isaiah Hallett was born on November 9, 1783 and died on April 13, 1823. He was an Early Ohio settler
in 1813 coming with his family from
Kennebec County, Maine where he was born. Isaiah Hallet was on the 1810
census, Waterville, Kennebec, Maine. That was the location of his father Solomon Hallet and his uncle, both Revolutionary War soldiers.
The Dennis Town Hall Parish Records in
Barnstable County show as the location he was Baptized and that Isaiah was son to Solomon Hallet and Deborah, his wife. Isaiah married Anna Kimball on April 4, 1805. He Fought in the War of 1812. Isaiah was
a ship's captain and a Shoe Smith. He is said to have made the first
pegged shoe made in Washington County Ohio. The idea of pegging, to attach the soles and heels to the upper part of the shoe, was begun in an attempt to
extend the life of the shoe because the threading and stitching often rotted because of dampness and caused the sole to fall
off. It was sometimes used along with stitching or nailing. The pegs were 3/4" long, tapered, and slightly
thicker than a wooden match.
Records
show they lived next to Almon Sole in Fearing township, Washington Co. Ohio in 1820 with Anna's sister and
husband. Isaiah and Anna's Children were Isaiah Howes Hallett, Ruth "Ruthy" Hallett, Solomon Hallett, Hanah Kimball Hallett,
Orrelane Hallett, Isaac Hallett and Zenas Hallett. (who is the next descendant in my bloodline)
