Asa Davis Hallett was born in 1843 in Salem Washington County Ohio and died in 1919 in the same. He was
a well-known farmer and highly respected citizen of Salem township, Washington County , Ohio, and an honored survivor of the Civil War. Asa D. Hallett,was
reared on his father's farm in Salem township, and attended the
public school. When he was 18 years old he enlisted in services to
defend his country. In 1861 he enrolled his name in Company D, 42nd Regl, Ohio vol. Inf., under Captain Riggs,
and remained in the service until September, 1864, when he was mustered out at Columbus, Ohio. He participated in many of
the important engagements of the war, and took part in the siege of Vicksburg, the battles of Chickasaw Bluffs, Thompson's Hill, Black River Bridge, and Champion Hill, and the battle of Middle
Creek, under Col. James A. Garfield.
He was 4th corporal, and his record shows the valor of a true soldier. Asa D. Hallett Was
a member of Stanley Post, G. A. R., at Lower Salem. After
the close of the war, Asa returned to Salem township and resumed farming. He
owned a very valuable and well-improved farm, located within three miles of Salem comprising
of 52 acres of productive land. In 1870 Asa was married with Mary E. Morelan, who was born
in Wesley township in 1852. She was the daughter of William and Winnifred Morelan
.
Asa, Mary and the children were members of the Mount Ephraim Methodist Church, of which mary was a liberal
supporter. Asa served for several years as a school director and took an active interest
in the progress and development of the township. In politics he is identified with the republican party. Asa
D. Hallett was one of the leading representatives farmers of the township, and enjoyed the esteem of his fellow-citizens.
Asa's
children were Winnie May Hallett, Claude Zenus Hallett, Clyde Alda Hallett , Chester Ray Hallett, Mary Goldie Hallet,
Anna Lulu Hallett, Norma Maude Hallett and Carl Augustas Hallett ( who is the next descendant in my blood line)
